Upgrading the O2 CPU

Welcome.

Your O2 is designed so you can upgrade the hardware yourself without special training. But before you watch these videos or install the new CPU, you need to install the required software. Follow the software installation instructions in the "Installing the O2 CPU Upgrade" document that comes with this package.

Once you've installed the software, take a look at these videos. They provide a step-by-step demonstration of how to remove your current CPU and install the new one. Before diving in, take a look at Getting Started for helpful hints on playing videos.

Locating Online CPU Upgrade Instructions

If you don't have the printed O2 Workstation Owner's Guide handy, you can look at the step-by -step instructions in the online O2 Workstation Hardware Reference Guide. The online book was installed by default on the O2 system disk when you upgraded to IRIX 6.3 for O2 Including R10000. To locate the online book:

  1. From the Toolchest on your desktop, choose Help > Online Books > SGI EndUser > O2 Workstation Hardware Reference Guide.
  2. Select "Ordering, Removing, and Installing Replacement Parts."
  3. Search for either "Replacing the R5000 CPU Module" or "Replacing the R10000 CPU Module," depending on your workstation.
  4. Read the information online, or to print. choose Print from the Books menu in IRIS InSight.

If the Hardware Reference Guide has been removed from the Insight library on your system disk, you have two choices:
